About Us

In the few short years since opening, the Knotty Burl has earned itself a reputation as the go-to-spot for a good night out in Squamish. But, our history goes back much farther than just our opening night, in the summer of 2016. Partying is in our blood.
The Knotty Burl is owned and operated by Karina Leveque and James Patry. If Karina’s name rings a bell, her family’s been throwing epic parties since the early days of this small BC logging town. Her roots in Squamish go back to 1919, when her great grandfather, known as one of the New Brunswick French Boys, entered on to the scene. The French Boys, quickly made a name for themselves as loggers and as partiers.

On one fateful evening of 1929, at a Barn Dance and Poker Party hosted by the New Brunswick French boys, her grandfather epically came away from the poker table as the proud new owner of a Steam Engine Donkey. In those days, it was an impressive piece of equipment, which set him up to be one of the first famous logging men of squamish.

This heritage is in Karina’s blood. When she moved back to Squamish from a stint working in the Cayman Islands, she opened the beloved Ruddy Duck with Andrea Forsyth. For those that were lucky enough to experience a night at the Ruddy Duck, they know it was always a memorable one. The Ruddy laid the groundwork for the opening of the Knotty Burl – in 2016. We’ve accomplished a lot at the Knotty Burl, in only a few short years. The big names making their way to the stage, rival some of the most exclusive nightclubs in Vancouver. The Knotty Burl has put Squamish on the map, hosting world renowned DJs like the Funkhunters, Mat the Alien., Stickybuds and DJ Numark among many others.

We’ve also opened their doors to crowd-pleasing favorites like BCDC, Illvis Freshly, Skitour, and Dayglo Abortions. But there’s more – we’ve moved well beyond music, throwing extravagant burlesque shows, bad-ass comedy nights and adult only-evenings of entertainment.
